Citizenship by Investment, Explained Simply
The routes, the real costs, what is actually required of you, and why families choose Antigua — an honest walkthrough of the Citizenship by Investment Programme.
Antigua and Barbuda's Citizenship by Investment Programme (CIP) grants full citizenship to approved applicants and their families in exchange for a qualifying investment in the country. It's one of the most established programmes in the Caribbean, running since 2013 — and it's often misunderstood. Here's the honest version.
The routes. There are two paths most families consider. A non-refundable contribution to the National Development Fund starting at US$230,000, or a purchase of government-approved real estate starting at US$300,000. A University of the West Indies Fund option at US$260,000 exists for families of six or more, and a business investment route at a higher threshold. Government fees, due diligence fees, and processing fees apply on top of the investment itself, and fee schedules do change — we always confirm current figures against the official CIU schedule before a client commits.
Donation or real estate? The donation is simpler and cheaper at the entry point — money in, citizenship out, nothing to manage. Real estate costs more upfront but leaves you owning an asset: the property must be held for five years, after which it can be resold, and in the meantime it can generate rental income and give your family an actual foothold on the island. Neither is universally "better." It depends on whether you want a transaction or a stake.
What's required of you. All applicants aged 18+ take an oath of allegiance, and you must spend at least five days in Antigua and Barbuda within your first five years of citizenship — a requirement most of our clients treat as a welcome excuse rather than a burden. Applications must be filed through a licensed agent; you cannot apply directly.
Why families do this. In our experience it's rarely about any single passport stamp. It's mobility for business and travel, a second home base, security and options for children, estate and succession planning, and diversification out of a single jurisdiction. The families who are happiest with their decision are the ones who wanted Antigua itself — not just the document.
Who can be included. A spouse, children, dependent parents and grandparents, and unmarried siblings can all be included in one application, which is part of why Antigua's programme is consistently popular with larger families.
If you're weighing the routes, we'll walk you through real numbers for your family size — including every fee — before you decide anything.
